HUDS Veteran Housing ProgramThis 2015 New Year, in addition to your annual resolutions to lose weight, get more exercise, and be more patient with the inlaws, the Alameda County Housing Authority (HACA) and the local Veterans Administration (VA) ask you to consider investing in our country’s veterans.

In January 2013 EveryOne Home, a program dedicated to ending homelessness in Alameda County, determined there were 492 homeless veterans which accounted for 11.5% of all homeless people in the county.  Efforts continue on many fronts to secure stable housing and provide support services for those who made personal sacrifices to serve our country. You now have an opportunity to make a contribution to a cause in which we all believe!

HACA’s Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program combines Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers with case management and clinical services provided by the VA.  Since 2008, HUD and the VA have awarded VASH vouchers based on geographic need and a housing authority’s administrative performance.  HACA’s VASH program, (in coordination with VA offices in Oakland, Fremont, and Livermore), provides assistance to 125 veterans and their families.

Because of stable housing VASH participants throughout Alameda County have reestablished their ties within our communities.  HACA is committed to finding homes for veterans referred to us by the VA. However, as you know, our program doesn’t work without landlords willing to become our partners.

Here’s how you can help:  If you have an available rental home or apartment, call Kurt Heuer, Housing Specialist, HUD/VASH, VA Palo Alto Healthcare System at (408) 691-4188 or email him at Kurt.Heuer@va.gov.  Kurt works directly with landlords to place veterans in voucher-assisted housing and facilitate for those with special needs.  He is actively searching for immediate housing opportunities for veterans.  If you’d prefer to speak directly with HACA staff, call Daniel Taylor, HACA’s Special Programs’ Manager, at (510) 727-8507 or email him at DanielT@haca.net.

We at HACA thank you for your consideration of this request and send you our best wishes for the coming year.
